I LOVE Kapok pillows! These pillows are so easy to care for and feel so amazing. They are easily malleable to put the stuffing just where I need it. I can wrap it around my head, I can push it up under my shoulder, I can create a nose hole when I sleep on my stomach (I know, bad me).
Even better, I can machine wash and dry these occasionally so they last 20 times as long as regular synthetic pillows. They do take 2-3 dryer cycles to dry completely, but they come out so clean. I wash them every few months. Undyed organic cotton and natural kapok
Lighter than cotton and 100% vegan, our handmade kapok pillows offer a natural pillow alternative that’s 100% customizable, sustainable, and perfect for a great nights sleep
Encased in our premium organic cotton damask and available in a huge range of sizes, you can’t go wrong if you want a silky soft feel. And because we use damask instead of sateen, you can machine wash and dry ours.
I use these also whenever I travel, because they are completely washable, and I can get that icky hotel room smell out.
Why Kapok Fiber
Kapok is a natural fiber that comes from the Ceiba Tree in Central America. Kapok fibers come from the trees seed pods, which shed seasonally, meaning there is no machinery required to harvest it.
With a silky and fluffy consistency, kapok has the benefits of being fluffy like down, but plant-based like cotton, making it a wonderful vegan down alternative.
? Soft & fluffy, similar to down pillows (minus the animal products)
? Made with vegan, sustainable fiber from the Ceiba Tree
? Hypoallergenic & Ethically sourced
? Encased in luxurious GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Damask
? Hand-stuffed to avoid lumps & customizable so you can find the perfect firmness
Not sure how firm you like your pillows? Get your pillow with a zippered outer on our other listing, and add and remove filling to suit your own preferences. Simply store any excess material in a moisture and pest-proof container, or order more kapok fiber from us.
HISTORY OF KAPOK
• Kapok fibers were in the all-natural life preservers used by G.I.s in World War II.
• In the 1920, explorers conquering Mt. Everest typically wore high-altitude boots with kapok insulation, leather outers, gaiters and crampons
• Kapok fibers are one eight (0.08) the weight of cotton.
• Kapok was one of the first ancient non-food plants cultivated across Southeast Asia.
• Kapok was routinely used for pillows before goose down; Kapok is Retro Green.
• HERE’S A GOOD ONE THAT SUPPORTS WHY KAPOK IS BETTER THAN GOOSE DOWN:
o In theory, as the down moult naturally, the birds shouldn't mind if it’s taken. The reality: goose down is the byproduct of keeping millions of birds around the world in cages, the lion’s share before they are slaughtered for cheap meat, or foie gras. Therefore, buying down products carries the high risk of making you complicit in this industry.
• Kapok is a vegetable down. It’s been used for years in the maritime industry because of its buoyancy. In the 1940s, all sorts of items - life belts, seating cushions, mattresses — were filled with Kapok, which is water repellant and enables it to keep afloat from 30 to 35 times its weight. Ordinary cork can only support 5 times its weight. — article in Grey River Argus, 16-October 1907!!!
Kapok is harvested from the seed pods of a kapok tree (the tree is never cut down). This natural pillow will compress with use but can be placed dry in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to help plump the pillow. This is our softest feeling pillow. These are not zippered but we offer zippered versions as well. You can also occasionally machine wash and dry and it will plump up.
